Jim’s Story

It’s Thursday and as usual Jim is welcoming guests to the Family House, but it wasn’t too long ago he was a guest himself.

Grateful for Refuge

After being a longtime Grants Pass resident, Jim and his wife, Donna, retired to Arizona where Donna was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Donna wanted to go “home” to be closer to her family and receive her treatment at Spears Cancer Center, a place she trusted because of her past experience.

If it weren’t for the Family House, Jim and Donna would have had to sell their home. Instead, they spent many weeks at the Family House surrounded by caring, concerned staff and other guests while Donna received treatment.

Sadly, Donna lost her battle with cancer, but Jim expresses his gratitude for all the Family House provided by volunteering one day a week. His favorite part of volunteering is talking with the guests and encouraging them. He has compassion for all who enter the house, a compassion that comes from a deep understanding of a similar experience.
