Darrell’s Story
One Sunday afternoon, after an ordinary family celebration, Darrell took a nap only to wake up unable to see clearly. What seemed at first like fatigue became something far more serious.
Grateful for compassion
Thanks to his wife Amy’s instincts and the rapid response of the emergency team at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, Darrell was rushed into care just in time. Within minutes of arriving at the hospital, he was surrounded by clinicians who knew exactly what to do.
Darrell was quickly diagnosed with a stroke and received an emergency Cath Lab procedure to remove a piece of plaque in his brain. With the initial blockage gone, a secondary blood clot released leaving him temporarily unable to move or speak. Amy remained by his side, facing fear, uncertainty and an entirely new reality.
What stood out most to Darrell and Amy was not just the advanced medical care they received at Asante, but the humanity behind it. Doctors and nurses explained every step, stayed calm and encouraging during the most frightening moments, and met Darrell exactly where he was, sometimes even kneeling to speak to him eye to eye.
Recovery began almost immediately, first in the Intensive Care Unit at Rogue Regional then in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Center. For six weeks, physical, occupational and speech therapists rallied around Darrell, pushing him gently but firmly, celebrating small victories and constantly reminding him that progress was possible. The Asante staff didn’t just focus on Darrell’s recovery; they trained Amy too, making sure she felt confident caring for him at home. “They didn’t just prepare him for discharge,” Amy said. “They prepared us for life.”
“We weren’t treated like a diagnosis,” Amy shared. “We were treated like people and that made all the difference.”
Darrell went from a wheelchair to a walker and eventually to a cane — cheered on every step of the way by the clinical and rehabilitation staff at Rogue Regional. Today, he’s back at work, continuing therapy and still making progress. “I don’t take things for granted anymore,” Darrell reflected. “I’ve learned not to give up and to appreciate every day.”
Their gratitude for the expertise and compassion shown to them during Darrell’s care is deep and lasting. When they got home and settled into their new way of life, they made a gift to Asante Foundation to express their thanks. “We’ve been to a lot of hospitals,” Amy said. “Asante is different. The people here truly care.”
“Every person we encountered treated us with compassion, took time for us and cared about what mattered to us. Giving back felt like the natural next step.”
