Asante cancer care
The challenge:
Every year, in Southern Oregon and Northern California, more than 2,000 people hear the words “you have cancer.” In this largely rural region, patients and families deserve the highest level of care, close to home, at every step of their cancer journeys.
The solution:
Asante provides high-quality, comprehensive cancer care, customized to the unique needs of the communities we serve. Known for their skill and compassion, our physicians, providers and care teams are backed by deep community support. Facilities are a crucial part of the treatment and healing process. Purpose-built spaces house the latest technology while creating a restorative environment that puts patients and families first.
Where we are now:
Thanks to community support, the Mary and Dick Heimann Cancer Center in Medford and the expanded Helen K. Spears Cancer Center in Grants Pass opened in January 2022. Before this, patients had to travel to dozens of locations for all the necessary scans, lab work, doctor visits, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Now all this care happens under one roof, along with support services like social work, nutrition, nurse navigation and massage. Thousands of people donated their hard-earned money to make these facilities a reality and they can be proud of the results:
- Treatments and procedures that were once only offered in Portland or the Bay area are now routinely provided in our community.
- Heimann Cancer Center houses our growing research program. Active since the 1990’s the research program is benefitting from philanthropy to help more people from rural communities have access to leading-edge therapies.
- A vibrant continuing medical education program brings the latest information and best practices from the national level to our local medical teams.
- The Asante Cancer Compassion Fund is helping people in need – because life doesn’t stop when you are diagnosed with cancer.
What’s next:
Asante Rogue Regional’s Medical Oncology Unit – the highly specialized department where cancer care takes place, inside the hospital—is staffed by a team uniquely prepared to care for the patient and their loved ones during life’s most vulnerable times. When people need stabilization for the most acute symptoms of cancer, when people undergo highly sensitive chemotherapies, and when people on a non-curative path need special care toward end-of-life, the Medical Oncology Unit is the place.
Housed on the third floor of the west wing of the hospital and part of the original 1958 construction, the Medical Oncology Unit has not been refurbished in nearly half a century. The lack of modern design and integrated technology means less efficiency for medical staff and less continuity of experience for cancer patients. It means less comfort for family and friends at the bedside of the person they love. It is a reality that impacts our community.
How you can help:
It is imperative that we work together to transform the Medical Oncology unit. This transformation is as necessary and the result will be as profound as the creation and expansion of Asante’s state-of-the art outpatient cancer centers. In fact, renovation of Medical Oncology is the next crucial step in Asante’s plan for cancer care; a plan to serve every patient, every time – at every step of the way.
With community support, Asante will conduct a total renovation of Medical Oncology, so this facility can match the high level of compassionate care delivered inside its walls.
